Dear Mr. Doll:
The Westsyde Community Development Society (WCDS) was incorporated as a not-for-profit society under the Society Act in May 2001 by a group of Westsyde neighbourhood residents. We are a volunteer group.
Our aim was, and still is, “to foster, promote, encourage, and improve recreational sports, athletics and education; and to promote and encourage strong and lasting fellowships and good will among its member of the (Westsyde) community,” particularly its youth. The society’s registered Constitution and Bylaws reflect these objectives.
Over the years we have also become the resource for community concerns from community policing to traffic flow. We have been recognized by the city as one of Kamloops’ premier community groups and are often sought after for advice and suggestions from other community associations in the city.
In the context of the above, the purpose of this letter is to indicate that the WCDS supports the paving of the dike around Oak Hills, as part of the Rivers Trail development project. Paving of this dike would provide the following benefits to Westsyde residents:
- A paved dike encourages more recreational opportunities, such as biking, as the dike is an extension of the paved portion of the Rivers Trail, and fits with the original recreational focus of the WCDS.
- Although in the past, there was been opposition from some area residents about paving this dyke, the WCDS has consistently supported its paving to facilitate its multiple recreational uses.
- Dog walkers, originally opposed to paving the dike, now have a dedicated $25,000.00 dog park. It is also our understanding that there will be room on top of the dike to accommodate walking beside the paved portion of the path.
